Island Ecology

Island Ecology

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?

Ibiza Ecology

I must admit that I find it ever so difficult to write about ecology or even just to think of it this week.

I always write my column the week before it is published, so there is time for the editor to correct my English grammar and cut off most of my political sarcasm and bitterness. According to him, everything has to be said politically correctly. (Gary is right, but I wish the politicians themselves were and would also act in "politically correct" fashion sometimes).

I'm writing this just a few hours after the wild terrorist attack on the USA. In fact, it took me three days to write as far as here, and I'm still trying to get myself back inside my own skin, if I can find it first.

So I hope that you can also understand how childish and senseless I feel, under the present circumstances, writing and trying to gain some sympathy and respect for a certain flower or bird, little fish or a "bush" of seaweed, trying to keep a smile on my face and dreaming of sharing a better world.

The environment doesn't seem to be in the mood for it. What do you think?

Sorrow! Sorrow for all the victims. Sorrow for the future victims. Sorrow for the future criminal hands. Sorrow!

Is this the reason to grow so much and so fast?

To develop such a big amount of energy and power, to turn it against ourselves? Against nature and the whole world?

Is this the progress that our leaders want us to reach and then lead us against it?

Is this the way they lead their diplomacy? How to influence people and make friends?

I do not understand. And I do not know anybody who does.

Meanwhile, the sun keeps rising from the East every twenty-four hours, so we have reached the end of the summer, coming into autumn. We'll move slowly in to land, to discover a little bit more of the Island's ecology and nature and we want to share it all with you.

Let's hope that this time, all politicians are humanely inspired and "politically correct" so that as little damage as possible is done. Even so, I would like to end this week repeating what Woody Allen said in one of his films. "Please, don't shoot me, my doctor says that bullets can seriously damage my health."

Can I take them to court, like "Phillip Morris"? If it happens will I survive?
